Protecting the Privacy of Vermonters Public Hearing -- Protecting the Privacy of Vermonters Public Hearing hosted by the Vermont Attorney General and the Vermont Department of Public Service. The Vermont Attorney General and Department of Public Service host a hearing on August 8th in Burlington for citizens, industry representatives, business people and members of academia to provide insights on the implementation of recently passed Vermont legislation regarding consumer privacy specified in the Data Broker Registry (authorized in Act 171), how to apply consumer protections to telecommunications providers, whether Vermont should designate a Chief Privacy Officer, changes to Vermont's Security Breach Notice Act, matters related to the State of Vermont's handling of citizen data, laws/ regulations to encourage the growth of privacy oriented technology companies in Vermont, and the necessity of additional approaches to protecting data security and privacy of Vermont consumers. In addition to VPIRG, ACLU and Vermonters knowledgable on the issue of privacy, the hearing features national speakers including Pam Dixon of the World Privacy Forum and Ariel Fox Johnson of Common Sense (which helped pass the California bill). The hearing includes discussion of both California and the European Union's recently passed sweeping privacy protections (known as the GDPR). A follow up hearing will be held on September 25, 2018.
